Just a few days after going on sale, OpenMoko has received at least a thousand orders, but has since gone quiet. Nothing has shipped and no update on planned shipping dates. One developer (Harald Welte) is venting his frustration.
1. There are indeed one thousand units available for sale, but at this point no one but insiders know how many orders were actually received. OpenMoko has stated that you cannot tell from the order id#s.
2. OpenMoko had previously said publicly in the community forum that no orders would ship *prior to* July 16th, so no slippage has occurred.
3. In reading the original post, you might assume that Harald Welte was one of the developers waiting to receive his order, but in fact he is one of the OpenMoko insiders working to satisfy those orders. His frustration stems from being unable to meet the stronger-than-expected demand.
4. OpenMoko is indeed being very quiet, but that is because they are swamped with work to meet the demand.
While the project leaders have indeed been fairly quiet in the last week, they have made some posts on the mailing list. And, the order processing people are busy this weekend checking on orders (some of the first orders didn't have enough information as a color choice checkbox was omitted from the web order page :-)). You have to remember that FIC, the parent company for hardware sales, are used to selling tens of thousands of phones at one time to carriers; this is their first foray into individual sales. While it has not been completely smooth sailing on this new ocean, the ship seems very much upright and on course to deliver this developer preview release.
