Any ideas?

I would like to install a nice easy to use kernel on my old laptop for terminal purposes, the laptop specs are as below.

Model/Make: KTX 1000
CPU- 200Mhz Pentium MMX
31.7Mb RAM
VGA, CD-ROM ect.

I have tried to install a few distros including the new xubuntu for low memory pcs and still I am getting errors that my little 31Mbs of RAM are insufficient. I guess what I would like to know is where can I find out how to install just the kernel or maybe even a really light low mem distro with gNOME/KDE so I can have the desktop functionality.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Tyson.

I'm running Debian 3.1 that I installed from the handful of floppy images you need to get the box up and on the web. I installed X and am running lwm, vpn, ssh, vncviewer, mutt. My box has 120 Mhz Pentium, 16 Meg memory, 48 Meg swap and 1 GB disk. I have been selective on what I installed and I am using only about 50% of the disk. It works pretty good and speed is OK. I doubt that most distros will install with 32 Meg. Slackware and Debian are your best bets, though a lightweight WM is a must.

I'll second that. I have a fairly low spec laptop (though not as low spec as the one quoted) and Debian chugs away nicely with a variety of services hogging it's (limited) memory.
