Sun shines as open source pays off

Like many others in the dark years that followed April 2000, Sun saw profitability and growth fade right away and much of the sheen knocked off its brand.

Its pugnacious front man, Scott McNealy, also lost some gloss in the dotcom aftermath as the company struggled with how to position its Java and Solaris software efforts and maintain sales momentum and margins on its server boxes.
