GPLv3 Draft 3 Survey by OpenLogic

OpenLogic, Inc., a provider of enterprise open source solutions encompassing hundreds of open source packages, today announced the results of a survey regarding the most recent draft of the GPL v3. The survey shows that OpenLogic Expert Community members, who are leading committers and contributors of open source products, are positive about the most recent draft of the GPLv3. 71% of respondents who currently use the GPL v2 said they would support moving projects they work with to the GPLv3 when the final draft comes out.

The poll was conducted with OpenLogic Expert Community members in the days following the release of draft 3 of GPLv3. Forty-five Expert Community members corresponded, many of whom participate in more than one open source project.

In summary, the poll found that OpenLogic Expert Community Members are positive on GPLv3 despite concerns about some provisions.

-Among Expert Community respondents who voiced an opinion, 3 to 1 believe that GPLv3 is good for open source.
o 50% of the respondents said that they believe GPLv3 is good for open source.
o 29.5% are not sure
o 15.9% said they do not believe GPL v3 is good for open source

-However, respondents also have concerns about provisions of Draft 3.
o 57% were concerned about provisions around patent issues
o 57% were concerned about provisions around digital rights management
o 43% were concerned about provisions around the use of GPL-covered programs in consumer devices

-Of respondents that are working on GPLv2 projects
o 71% would be in favor of some or all of these projects moving to GPLv3
o 77% thought that it would take a year or less for their projects to move to GPLv3 once the final version of GPLv3 was released
